Olive oil is believed to have a protective effect against a variety of cancers,including breast cancer, prostate cancer endometrium and digestive track cancer. It also is extremely high on oleic acid which is used to reduce blood pressure. And if that was not enough to convince you of olive oil health benefits, olive oil also has a higher proportion of monounsaturated fats than animal fat (butter). Studies have indicated that if you replace saturated fats with monounsaturated fats you can lower your risk of coronary heart disease. And dont forget that olive oil is naturally, cholesterol, sodium, sugar and carbohydrate free! Eat well, feel good.

The average age of an olive tree is between 300 and 600 years. However the oldest certified olive tree is more than 2000 years old - Olive tree of Vouves, situated on the island of Crete, Greece. It is probabily the oldest olive tree In the world and still produces olives today. In New Zealand our oldest olive tree dates back to 1830 when Charles Darwin observed them growing at Waimate North. There are early plantings too in Hokianga, Kerikeri, Snell Beach and Whangarei and the grounds of the Waitangi Treaty House.

Did you know that to produce 1 litre of Extra Virgin Olive Oil you will need to harvest between 5 and 7 kg of olives. The average tree might produce around 30kg all up so you will get out of it only around 5 litres of this liquid gold. No wonder is expensive to buy!
